Winter Hair Tips

Winter has well and truly arrived, what does that mean for your hair? Winter can really have a damaging effect on your hair. With every degree in temperature drop your scalp slows down the production in sebum (natural oils) leaving your hair dryer than normal.

Going in and out of the cold air, hot rooms and wearing hats also can create a less than ideal environment for your hair and scalp. Lack of humidity also causes your hair to become dehydrated.

This is why in winter your hair will feel drier and is prone to be fly away and have a lot of static. Static is caused through a lack of moisture; the hair is searching for moisture when it gets to this stage.

Here are my 5 tips for keeping your hair looking beautiful this winter;

  1. Keep washing your hair to a minimum. Keeping a small build up of the natural oils in your hair for longer will help maintain moisture in your hair, stopping your hair from splitting and becoming fly away.
  2. Use a good leave-in moisturiser. This will increase the amount of moisture in your hair and also put a protective coating over your hair, to protect it from the harsh winter conditions. Kerastase make a great leave-in oil called Elixir Ultime. Made from 4 essential oils it is designed to hydrate your hair and keep it supple. If you don’t like using oil in your hair the Elixir Ultime comes in a leave –in Crème as well.
  3. Wear a hat to protect your hair from the harsh wintry conditions. Hats come in all shapes and sizes and are an ideal fashion accessory as well. Although as mentioned above not ideal for your scalp, it is better than exposing your hair to the elements.
  4. If you are using a hairdryer and styling iron on a regular basis, a heat protector is very useful. You would use this as well as a leave-in moisturiser to stop your hair from becoming brittle. Osis make a fantastic thermal protector called Flatliner. It protects your hair up to 200 degrees and also has good hold and shine qualities.
  5. Regular visits to your stylist. A good stylist will always recommend what is best for your hair. Regular trims are a must to stop your hair from becoming brittle and splitting. A deep conditioning hair mask will also be of benefit for winter. This can be done in a salon or once a week at home.
