Are you bored with your do? Struggling to come up with a different style that will suit you? The change of seasons I believe inspires a lot of people to want change. Hair styles are strongly influenced by fashion and as we know fashion changes from season to season. We are also very much influenced by celebrities. The majority of requests we get for styles are usually images of celebrities. We are exposed to celebrities everywhere, through all forms of media.

Balayage has been a massive look for celebrities.

Balayage has been a massive look for celebrities.

The Sunkist look has been one of the most popular looks with celebrities in recent times. The technique used to create this look is called balayage, which is a French high lighting technique that gives the hair a very natural look. This is an example of how celebrities have influenced hair fashion in recent times.

As autumn comes to end and winter is just around the corner I will feature some winter looks that might inspire a change. If any of you have had a colour consultant ever do your colours for you to see what colours suit you best, the consultant will break the colours down into four groups. Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. This can be a little confusing as some of the colour groups do cross over, and unless you pay a consultant a lot of money to go through this process in quite a bit of detail it can become a little over whelming.

Over the many years of being a hairdresser I have done quite a bit of training in this area and have simplified to make it easy to understand. I break it down to just two groups, warm and cool toned people. Most people are very aware of what colours they feel comfortable in. I can generally tell what tones my clients feel most comfortable in by the colour of their make-up and the clothes they are wearing. This is one reason why when you come to Hair by Phd we do not put a gown on you until we have consulted with you about your hair.

Surprisingly enough the majority of the population are cool toned. There is nothing worse than seeing a cool toned person in a warm toned top or a hair colour that is too warm for their skin; it makes their skin look sallow and yellow. You know those looks that just don’t not look right? Get it right and the person’s skin radiates, their eyes stand out and they generally glow and look healthy. This is how much impact a good or bad colour can have on how you look and feel.

A muted cool blonde with a strong cool red lipstick, is a great winter look.

Here is an example of a winter look. If you are in the winter spectrum you are definitely a cool toned person. Colours which are cool based for example, blood reds, blue based reds like violets and ash based browns are the go. If you put colours like mustard or orange based reds on a winter or cool toned person it will not flatter them like a cool tone? Winter fashion tends to have a lot of black, grey’s and bold blood reds. In the D&G image below you will see a classic cool winter look. Stunning blood red dresses muted brown hair and gorgeous make to suit.

Spring sees colours come to life. Still the majority of the colours are cool but tend to be more pastel in colour. Like I said earlier it is easier to break colours down into cool and warm as people who are winter toned can also wear spring and summer tones.

Summer is fun in the sun, with blonde being the obvious colour and hair colour being lighter in general. The image shows Jennifer Anitson as a blonde. She always has her hair beautifully high lighted. Summer is also cool toned, and you will see much more bold colouring in fashion as shown by the image below

Last but not least is Autumn. If you are a warm toned person the chances are you will be an Autumn. All red heads are autumn or warm toned. If you are warm toned and don’t have red hair the chances are there is somebody in your family who does. Colours like orange, coppers, warm reds or blondes are the go here. The fashion in this image below is pure Autumn. The hair colour is copper and warm blonde.

This has been a brief run down of how seasons influence colour and style but the rules can be broken. Some people can wear tones that aren’t necessarily ideal but seem to have the ability to pull it off. At the end of the day it is what makes you happy and comfortable. I know as winter tone myself I feel very comfortable in cool coloured clothes and hideous in warm toned clothes. I can’t even bring myself to putting on a yellow or orange shirt.

If you do feel like a bit of a change ask one of our stylist to help you choose a new colour or style next time in you are in the salon. If you see a style online email it to us or bring it in with you.

Next week I will be doing a feature on winter blondes and have a great offer for anyone wanting to be a winter blonde.
