Should everyday be Mother’s Day?
My Mum and family.

My Mum and family.

Well I think everyone would agree that everyday should be Mother’s Day, however I don’t think we should reduce the significance of Mother’s Day. It is a day where we celebrate our mums. What would we do without them?

My mum is one of a kind. She totally lives for her family and a more selfless woman you would not meet. As much as my family and I really appreciate her I would dearly love to see her do more for herself. It’s just not how she operates.

My wife Briony and the boys

Then we have the new generation mum (my wife), I have to take my hat off to her. She works part time, coaches’ two netball teams and still finds time to be an amazing mum to our three boys. Wow, I get tired just thinking about it.

I am sure you all have stories you can tell about the mums in your life. They are truly special people and they shape and influence so many lives. This is why I think it should be Mother’s Day everyday. We can’t buy them gifts everyday but through our actions we need to really make them feel appreciated every day.

So what do we buy mum for Mother’s Day? Flowers is a given, I think it is the biggest day on the local florists calendar. Let’s face it every girl loves to get flowers mum or not. So many things on offer these days we are overwhelmed with choices and ideas which I think makes it even harder.

We love spoiling mums at Hair by Phd and next week we have a big week installed for them. We will be serving sparkling wine to all our mums and we  will be giving a complementary hand massage with every service. So if the gift of beautiful hair is something you would like to give your mum, we have a great gift voucher offer to pamper your mum with.

Celebrating Our Gorgeous Over 50’s
Celebrating our beautiful over 50's

Celebrating our beautiful over 50’s

Many years ago I was styling one of my clients hair, as I was blow-drying her hair I found that her hair just would not dry. She was sweating profusely and I started to panic, asking her if she felt ok, or if there was anything I could do for her. It wasn’t until she had left that I realised what was happening, she was having a hot flush. The poor thing was so embarrassed to say anything. And me, well I felt like a fool not picking up on what was going on.

I was at a conference recently in beautiful Queenstown NZ, where one of the speakers was talking about cultures and how to create great cultures that people want be part of. There was a conversation that came about on how in some cultures menopause is a celebrated event not something to be embarrassed about. It is like adolescence is a transition from child to adult, menopause is a transition from the responsibilities of child-bearing and family care to a state of independence and wisdom. Although some grandmothers might argue with the independence thing!

I am not proclaiming to be an expert on menopause or women over 50 but through my life experiences, I believe women over 50 should be celebrated. From seeing and hearing what my mum, mother in-law and my gorgeous over 50 clients have done in their lives to this point. They are generally the rock in most relationships bringing up families, juggling a career and trying to have a life of their own. We should take our hats of to these ladies and celebrate them.

In saying all this I think women over 50 are starting to come into their own. Some have great careers; some are post children and post husbands for that matter and are spreading their wings and flying. Not saying you should all leave your husbands and start a new life, but I think through the wisdom that life has bestowed on them and a new found independence being over 50 is being embraced. Ladies over 50 are a very valuable part of our culture, community and society and I believe are starting a culture of their own.

At Hair by Phd we care for a lot of over 50 clients’. We love looking after them and I know from a personal point of view I love spending time with them. They are interesting people with a lot of wisdom to share. We have the pleasure of constantly being able to spoil these lovely ladies and making them feel great about themselves as well as making them look and feel years younger. We have a comprehensive amount of services tailored for our over 50 clients. Everything from taking care of the unwanted grey hair with our colour treatments, making your hair more manageable through our Keratin Smoothing Treatments, Hair Rituals and Conditioning Treatments that care for your hair, along with soothing head massages that are just about relaxation and escape. Just to name a few!

Let’s celebrate these beautiful people and this Mother’s Day lets spoil the hell out of them. For those who are not mums they deserve to be spoilt as well. This Mother’s Day Hair by Phd will be dedicating the week leading up to Mother’s Day to all the very special Mums out there. Watch this space for all the details.

The Braid

Fashions come and go, they go around in circles and the braid has really stood the test of time. When I started my apprenticeship in the mid eighties we were doing lots of braids. Not long after that it was a style that you would only see on young girls in school play grounds.

However today they have made a huge resurgence. Celebs seem to have embraced the braid in a big way. We are also doing a lot more of them in the salon. Bec who is the braiding expert at Hair by Phd has put together a collage of braids for our clients to choose from.

Braids are very versatile; they can be worn by young girls to school, for dancing and other performing arts, casual social functions, and every day wear to the most formal of occasions. Braids can be made to look very pretty and feminine, also very chic and sophisticated.

Braiding is widely used by different cultures as well. Africa would be the continent which really comes to mind. With the migration of a lot of African people into Australia and a lot of them settling in western Sydney, there are some awesome braided hairstyles to be seen on the streets. We are also seeing a lot of salons opening which are run by Africans specialising in African style braiding. This is another wonderful aspect of this interesting mixing pot of different cultures we live in.

So if you are after any advice on what braids can work for you for the next big occasion come on in and see Bec and the girls at Hair by Phd. p.96354721.  e. info@hairbyphd.com.au

Things you should know about Keratin Hair Treatments.

The latest craze in hair. For the last few years now we have seen it all over the media both positive and negative publicity. Clients love it, the results are fantastic, however there have been questions asked about the safety of this product. The majority of Keratin products were found to have higher than safe levels of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is what made these products work so well, but high exposure to it can be carcinogenic. The real danger was not with the client but with the hairstylist who was constantly breathing in the fumes  while doing the treatment on clients. As soon as I found out that there was a danger involved I removed it from the salon immediately. Unfortunately there a many salons out there that continued to use it knowing that it was unsafe. The treatment was that popular that there were dollars to be made and some operators couldn’t help themselves. One thing I will not risk is the health of my staff, clients, and let alone my own health for a few dollars. It is scary what people will do for money. If while you are having the service feel like it is irritating your eyes, throat or making you feel nauseous then there is a good possibility the product is not safe. Be aware of the cheap operators and the home Keratin treatments. This is not a treatment I would recommend you do at home.

After trying and testing a few different products, we have finally found one that works amazingly well and is totally safe to use. The product is called “The Best” by GK Hair. We have had amazing results with this Keratin Treatment. We have been given the safety data sheets from GK Hair to reassure us that the product has been tested and conforms with Australian Safety Standards.

Now the positives of “The Best” Keratin Treatment. With previous treatments after having the service done you would have to wear your hair straight for 3 days, not being able to tie it up, wash it or disturb it in any way. Very frustrating for a lot of people. With ‘The Best’ once your treatment is complete you can do want you want with it, wash it, tie it up, pin it up or whatever you would normally do with your hair. The condition it leaves your hair in is amazing, your hair becomes easy to manage, blow dry time is decreased dramatically, and the shine is amazing. Keratin treatments will not make your hair dead straight so you can still wear it curly or wavy. You do not get a regrowth like a permanent straightening; it slowly goes back to its natural state without damaging the hair at all. It makes your hair resistant to humidity, so no more frizzy hair on humid days. This is the one positive most of our clients who have had the service rave about the most.

We now have clients having it done for the second time and the results are even better with every treatment. The treatment lasts approximately 12 weeks the first time you have it done and 15 weeks every time after that. Click on the link below to check out the Hair by Phd Keratin Package.

If you are interested in having it done or would just like to talk to one of our stylists about the treatment, give us a call on 96354721 or email us on info@hairbyphd.com.au and we will arrange a time that suits you to come in and have a complimentary consultation on how this great treatment can benefit you.

Have you had any good or bad experiences with Keratin Treatments? If you want tell us your story or want any advice on Keratin Treatments, leave a comment and I will reply.

Oscars 2012

Who had the best hair at the 84th Annual Academy Awards?

After all the BS that has been going on in the last week in Canberra it was very refreshing to focus on something more exciting today. The red carpet event at the Oscars did not disappoint, with all the Hollywood stars out to impress. Here’s my take on the outfits and the hairdo’s. I’ll be rating the hairdo’s out of 10.

Angelina Jolie arrived with her man Brad Pitt wearing a black number by Atelier Versace. Simple, but a very elegant number. The red lips were striking, her hair disappointing. Like many Hollywood girls at the event they went for the boring option when it comes to the hair. Very uninspiring! Down with loose curls. 3/10

Cameron Diaz was very sexy in her Gucci dress. The hair was cool but not for a function of this nature. Would have liked to see something more elegant to match the beautiful dress. 5/10

Rooney Mara wore Givenchy and she wore it well. Her hair was stunning with her fringe being the focal point. It really bought out her facial features and would definitely make you look twice. 7/10

Jennifer Lopez dressed by Zuhair Murad. I’m still picking up my jaw off the ground. This is one very attractive lady and her hair although simple looked beautiful. Need I say more about this stunning lady? 7/10

Michelle Williams was all class in her Louis Vuitton dress. Red gowns were very big this year, and being my favourite colour I was happy to see lots of it. Michelle’s hair was a short pixie style that really was a standout. As a fan of short hair on ladies this was one of my picks of the night. 8/10

Another lady in red Emma Stone wore a dress by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture (that was a mouth full). This was seriously impressive. The dress was a big risk but it paid off big time. The hair simple but elegant really matched her outfit. One of the real glamour’s of the evening. 9/10

The last but the by no means  least. Penelope Cruz was the events total package. The dress by Georgio Amani just oozed class and was by far the pick of the event. The hair oozed even more class, complimenting the gown to a tee. Head to toe this look speaks for it self. Wow! 10/10

Would love to hear your thoughts on the 2012 Oscars and who was your favourite on the red carpet? Leave your comments below.

Summer Hair!

How to wear and look after your hair this Summer.

Ok! I’m sitting here on holidays with my family Charlie, Briony, Samuel and Sebastian (pictured) in beautiful Port Stephens, staying at the Oaks Pacific Blue Resort in Salamander Bay, enjoying the sun, surf and everything great about the Aussie summer. There is some awesome tennis on the T.V,  fantastic golf courses and the beer and wine is flowing. What else could one wish for?

Spending lots of time in the sun, pool and surf can damage your hair. Before I left for my holiday I wrote the Summer addition of the Hair by Phd Newsletter, and in it there are some great tips on how to wear and look after your hair this summer.   More good luck than good management.

So I’m going to cheat this week, only because I am on holidays. I am going to attach the link to our newsletter for all to read. Hope you enjoy it!

While I get back to the sun and surf, if you have any of your own tips, questions or comments regarding this blog, fire away and I will reply in a post answering any questions.

Here’s the link.
