Finding a Salon/Stylist

The Year that was 2018

In 2018, Hair by Phd celebrated it’s 50th birthday. This was only one of the many amazing achievements that happened this year. Hair by Phd continues to grow with our Camden and Carlingford salons welcoming some new team members into the salon’s family, while Parramatta also saw new team members joining this year.

The Hair by Phd family is growing outside of the salon too! Selma from our Carlingford salon welcomed her first child, Layla, into the world earlier in the year and now we are happy to announce that Sarah and Hope from our Parramatta salon are expecting too. You could say there’s something in the water at Hair by Phd. Congratulations to all 3 of them. Also, a big congratulations to Bec, our Director at Carlingford, and Hope, from Parramatta, who both tied the knot during the year.

Mum and dad with the Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson who came to the salon to congratulate Peter on 50 Years

In September, we had a visit from the Parramatta Lord Mayor, Andrew Wilson, to congratulate Peter and Georgette on 50-years of success. This is something not many people in business have achieved and for an individual who arrived in Australia with very little understanding of English, it is an amazing accomplishment. Peter’s mantra of treating every client who enters our doors with respect, lives on strongly today within all our salons. I believe it has been the key to the group’s success. You can read more about the 50-year story here.

This year, our Camden salon turned one and continues to grow and make its mark on the community. Lead by our amazing stylist, Lemai, the team is growing and developing nicely. Camden is a great town and I really enjoy my weekly visits their working with the team.

The team finished off the year at the beautiful Rockpool Bar and Grill for our Christmas party. This was a well-deserved night for all the girls for their contribution in making Hair by Phd what it is today. There were 21 beautifully dressed ladies and I at the dinner (Lucky me). Check out some of the images in this post as well as on all our social media platforms.

As a lot of you are aware Briony, my wife, is the head coach of the NSW Swifts and I would like to welcome three girls from the squad as our Hair by Phd Ambassadors. Paige Hadley (Carlingford), Sophie Garbin (Parramatta) and Sophie Halpin (Camden). The girls will be in the salons on a regular basis, so keep an eye out for them. We will organise a meet and great with the girls during 2019.

Also, in 2019, we have some exciting initiatives coming up. Stay tuned for our big Olaplex promotion we are holding in January. We will also introduce Seamless1 extensions to our range of services in the near future.

We are running different salon hours across our three locations through the Christmas and New Year period, so please see below our Christmas Trading Hours.

Miss Danika comes to Hair by Phd Camden

Before I met the lovely Miss Danika (pictured above), I must say I was a bit sceptical about cosmetic tattooing, mainly because I didn’t know a lot about it. Now after seeing how she has transformed Lemai’s eyebrows (our Salon Director at Camden), I am a true convert. Lemai pictured below far right.

When I left Lemai, as Miss Danika was about to start tattooing, Lemai was feeling a tad anxious. I called her later in the day and asked her to send me photos of the end result. Once I saw them I was a bit shocked at first because they were a bit darker than I anticipated. However after a few days they had settled and the result was amazing. She had beautiful eyebrows without having to paint them on every day.

“Did it hurt?” was my first question. Lemai mentioned that Miss Danika had used some numbing cream and it did not hurt at all. Bonus!

You can have your eyebrows, eyeliner and lips transformed with this amazing service. The tattooing is semi- permanent, which is great as it lasts. It’s also very natural looking and there are multiple colours to choose from. The images below are of Lemai two months after the treatment.

See below the list of services and prices. Enjoy the images above for Lemai’s before and after as well as some of Miss Danika’s other work.

Miss Danika is available by appointment at Hair by Phd Camden. She has also got an amazing offer for all our clients. Here it is…

A GREENER CHOICE FOR HAIRDRESSING

More than ever, we know that our clients are concerned with the amount of waste being produced by society. Programs like The War on Waste from the ABC and legislation changes have really brought concerns about the future of recycling and our planet into the spotlight – right where it should be.

We know that in hairdressing there is a lot of waste produced. From empty shampoo bottles, to hair and chemical waste after your colour is applied, to the 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium back to landfill by the Australian Hairdressing industry alone each year. There are plenty of ways in which a relaxing afternoon at the salon could be causing serious harm to the earth. We decided a number of years ago that this couldn’t continue to be the case.

Hair by Phd have been members of the Sustainable Salons programs in all our salons for the past few years. We are proud to share that we now recycle up to 95% of our salon waste in our Parramatta, Carlingford and Camden Salons and it is all thanks to our clients. A $2.50 donation from you on your hair treatments in salon over the past 2 years has allowed us to change the way our business is run and allowed us to help do our bit to make the world a better place.

“The hairdressing industry needs to take action now, and take care of the environment as much as we take care of clients”, says Paul Frasca, co-founder of SSA.  Hairdressers today really care about making their salon as eco-friendly as possible”.

Watch our latest episode of Hair by Phd On The Wall where we interview Paul Fresca, co-founder of Sustainable Salons Australia, and take a tour through their depot as we look to what actually happens to our salon waste through their program.

Every time you visit one of our salons, your visit supports our ongoing commitment to reduce our ecological footprint, achieve zero waste, support charitable causes and implement environmentally sustainable practices in all that we do at Hair by Phd.

Through Sustainable Salons Australia, we are able to recycle our waste in ways that seriously support the community and reduce the impact of your monthly salon visit:

  • All the proceeds gained from recycling the salon’s metals will be donated to not-for-profit community-based organisations that do a killer job helping humanity
  • Plastic product bottles, packaging and bags are recycled into outdoor furniture and underground sheeting to protect the NBN
  • Any leftover chemicals will be recycled into water and used in construction and roadworks
  • Cut–off hair will support charitable causes such as oil spill clean-up projects, local community gardens and charitable wig making services
  • Once our tools reach their end of life, they will be broken down and all valuable parts will be repurposed

We want to thank our loyal clients for their support in our work with Sustainable Salons Australia, and to the team from SSA for their support of our team as we learn new, less impactful ways of hairdressing. The future of the hairdressing industry certainly looks greener for your efforts.

50 Years of Hair by Phd

Pictured above Dad with John Harris (left) his longest serving client from Strathfield 1965 and Lance Harkus (right) one of dads first clients in Parramatta 1968

I have a story to share about a young migrant who came to Australia in 1960 from his home country of Lebanon. I have  heard this story countless times in my life and as much as I have heard it before and rolled my eyes when my father starts again, it truly is a story I am very proud of. Read on to see how Hair by Phd started and how it has grown to be a family business that really has contributed to this great country of ours.

I’m sure there are many success stories like this out there; unfortunately, I don’t think they get told enough, we tend to only focus on the bad ones.

Peter was a 20-year-old young man in 1960 when he chose to come to Australia for a better life. His knowledge of the English language was not great; he borrowed the money to make the 3-week journey by sea. He chose Australia because his older brother had met an Australian soldier in Lebanon who had brought him to this beautiful country. Peter came from a family of eleven children, they were poor and life was tough. He was lucky enough to have an uncle who trained him to be a barber. Back in those days, you would have to pay someone to teach you the trade until you could start earning money for the business. His uncle did this for free.

So Peter packed his bags and embarked on a three-week boat journey to join his brother in the land of opportunity. All he had was his bag, scissors, comb and a debt for his ticket over here.

Peter 1968

Not long after landing, Peter got a job working as a barber in Sydney’s CBD. He applied his trade and learnt to speak the language. He did this for around five years and through hard work and endless hours travelling around to friend’s places to cut their hair and play cards on the weekends, he paid his debt and saved enough money to open a small barbershop in Strathfield. It was now 1965 and this is where Peter’s Salon started.

Peter’s Salon 1968

In 1968 he was forced to close Strathfield because the lease was up and on the 2 September 1968 he opened a salon in Phillip St, Parramatta. He had to borrow money from the bank for this one and as a token of his appreciation to the bank manager who lent him the money, he was the first client in Phillip St, and yes it was a freebie! (Building customer relations from day one). 1968 was a massive year for Peter, he got married to Georgette in January and they were expecting their first born in November.

Peter’s brother Tony (Tannous) 1968

The salon soon grew to three team members and in 1970 Peter employed his first apprentice, Greg Bartley. 1970 was a special year for my parents, I was born and they haven’t looked back since LOL! Greg was with Peter for many years and has since gone on to be a very successful salon owner in his own right. He and I have become great friends and share a lot in common, including drinking too much red wine.

Tony Cass in the 70’s went on to buy Peter’s Wentworthville salon and be a very successful salon owner. Still a very dear friend to our family

The early 70’s became very tough for the barbering business, as fashions changed, inspired mainly by The Beatles. Men started growing their hair longer and getting their hair cut less often and this really hurt business for Peter. Trying to work out what to do next before he went broke was tough, so he decided to employ a ladies hairdresser. This made Peter’s Salon, Peter’s Unisex Salon – one of the first unisex salons in Parramatta.

Last day of Peter’s Unisex Salon, before we changed the name to Peter’s Hair Designers. Peter having his cut by Greg Bartley 1986

By the late 70’s, early 80’s, Peter had 3 salons – Parramatta, Bankstown and Wentworthville. Peter had created all this from hard work, the help of great people and an awesome wife. Georgette, although not actually working in the salons, was at home bringing up four children on her own, as well as being a major support for Peter.

1986 Peter’s Hair Designers is double the size and ready for business.

Don’t you love the 80’s. Peter’s Hair Designers in the late 80’s.

I joined the team fulltime in 1985 and in 1986 we doubled the size of the Parramatta salon and business was booming. Peter’s Unisex Salons changed its name to Peter’s Hair Designer’s and the new era started. My first venture into salon ownership was in 1990 when Peter and I opened Peter’s Hair Designer’s in Hurstville. I ran that for seven years and 1997 I decided it was time to spread my wings, closed the salon and went overseas for a few months.

Upon my return in 1998, Louise my sister had started her apprenticeship and was making a mark in the industry. A truly talented hairdresser, the salon grew to new heights. In the early 2000’s we refitted the Parramatta salon and changed the name to what it’s known as today – Hair by Phd.

Back in my younger days in the late 80’s with dad

Dad and my sister Louise mid 2000’s

Currently, we have 3 salons – Parramatta, who I partner with my sister Louise, Carlingford and Camden, who I partner with Bec and Lemai respectively. Both Bec and Lemai worked at our Parramatta salon for many years. I am taking the approach of growing Hair by Phd with our people and so far this approach is working well.

Mum and dad with the Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson who came to the salon to congratulate Peter on 50 Years

People are what our business is all about, the love for the industry, our team and our clients.  This is a lesson I learned early on from Peter – he would refer to his clients as friends and his team like family. He has trained hundreds of stylists through the apprenticeship program and many of them have gone on to be great hairdressers and salon owners.

Celebrating 50 years with dad and his most loyal clients

50 year Birthday cake

He has left a lasting legacy and contributed to this country by employing people and teaching them life skills, making people look great and making them feel good about themselves, and of course, lending a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen to through good times and bad.

Mum and Dad celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in January this year

There have been many ups and many downs along the way but to achieve 50 years in the one industry is an enormous feat. I have learnt a lot from my father and we all continue to be inspired by what he has achieved.

We will not stop here, I look forward together with a new generation of great stylists to keep contributing to our communities and making sure dad’s legacy lives on.

Hair by Phd Camden Turns One

Wow! That has gone so fast it’s crazy. On June 13 2018, Hair by Phd Camden will turn one. It has been an amazing ride for salon Director Lemai Wilson. Lemai, who worked for many years at Hair by Phd Parramatta, has become Camden’s hairdresser of choice.

In a very short time, Lemai has managed to build a great little salon in Camden. With three team members now she has really made her mark on the area. This is not always easy starting a salon from nothing in a new area where you haven’t worked before. Through her amazing skill as a hairdresser and her beautiful personality, Lemai has become a sought-after stylist in the Camden area.

We are also very lucky to have one of Australia’s top colourists join the team on a part-time basis. Damien Rayner, the Balayage King, has been weaving his magic in our Camden Salon.

As part of our first birthday celebrations, we have an amazing give away for everyone who visits the salon this month.

For every visit you will get an entry to WIN a hair and beauty pack valued at $500. PLUS every time you buy a take-home hair care product, we will give you an extra entry in the draw for every product you buy. The pack includes products from Kerastase, Lancôme and Bvlgari, an incredible luxury prize pack to celebrate our beautiful salon. The prize will be drawn on Saturday July 14 2018, so make sure you visit our lovely Hair by Phd Camden Salon and purchase some deluxe products for your hair to go into the draw to WIN!

Also if you have a friend you would like to recommend to Hair by Phd Camden, we are giving away a FREE hair, colour and scalp analysis/consultation with our expertly trained stylists.  We will literally put your hair and scalp under the microscope for an in-depth diagnosis. Damien Rayner will be available for this particular service on every Friday if you or a friend would like to have your colour consultation with him.

The salon offers a range of hair services, specialising in Balayage, colour correction, tape hair extensions and specialist treatments like Olaplex and Keratin Smoothing. We have the best in hair products featuring Kerastase, Schwarzkopf, Cloud Nine and more.

Come and join Lemai and the team in the celebrations, the bubbles will be flowing and we look forward to being at your service at Hair by Phd Camden.

Cheers,

Introducing Hair by Phd Camden

It’s coming up to three years since I opened Hair by Phd Carlingford with Rebecca. To date it’s been a great journey and Rebecca has really grown as a stylist and an amazing mentor to her team.

People say, “Why don’t you open more salons?” I wish it were that easy. Finding the locations is easy; but the secret is finding the right people to partner with – well I have found another good egg to partner with!

Great Hairdresser in Carlingford

Since the launch of our Carlingford salon in November 2014, the salon has gone from strength to strength, bringing in new apprentices, a host of new clients and a range of customers from all across the north western region, including areas like West Pennant Hills, North Rocks, Telopea, Ryde and Castle Hill. This shows that the work being produced by our team at Carlingford is absolutely top of their game, and today we want to showcase some of those amazing looks.

carlingford-hairdresser

Above we have a blue under-colour, designed to give a real pop to this beautiful brunette hair. An edgier style that shows real individuality and creativity, the evenness of the blue colour here is a real highlight. Typically, blue tones are harder to hold in the hair, as they are from the complete opposite colour spectrum to natural hair colours, which are normally in the range of warm tones. carlingford-hairdresser2

This soft pastel, rose-gold balayage was achieved with our Schwarzkopf colours and really shows off our clients ivory skintone. This is a soft look for those not wanting to go as overly dramatic with their colour but still wanting to move away from natural tone.
carlingford-hairdresser3

This beautiful bruntte-to-red colour melt is one of the most popular looks from our Carlingford salon on Instagram. Beautiful Autumn colour tones, perfect for trans-seasonal dressing, and a soft blend between the two colours. This colour will age on the hair really nicely, so don’t be afraid to go Ombre.

carlingford-hairdresser4
And finally, our piece de resistance! From a very average and uneven blonde, to a metallic blue grey, this colour is going to be huge this winter, as an extension of the grey-hair trend we saw happening last year. Using Olaplex with this colour allowed us to achieve our clients desired look whilst maintaining the hairs condition. I’m sure you would agree the beautiful tones of this blue grey are just to die for!

So which is YOUR favourite look out of our Carlingford salon? Do you know anyone in the area that could really use a great hairdresser that understands what they are looking for? If so, please SHARE this post, we want to make as much beautiful hair as we can!

If  you haven’t done so already check out our Facebook page and like us to follow all that is happening at Hair by Phd. You can also follow us on InstagramPinterest and Google+.

Sarkis will be back from hist surgery in a few weeks, and we will be talking about the change in hair trends as we move into winter!

Sincerely,

Bec

People are constantly having a whinge about Gen Y’s and in a lot of case their whinging is justified. But you know what, which generation didn’t have it’s own issues. I sometimes think that people don’t have anything better to do but to whinge. If they spent that energy on doing something productive they would be amazed what they could achieve.

Why Don’t Hairdressers Get What I Want?

Frustrated at never getting what you ask for from your stylist? There could be multiple reasons for this and I think the biggest one is communication. Other reasons could be lack of experience and training from the stylist.

Finding a hairdresser that you are comfortable with can be a bit of a struggle. From an industry point of view unfortunately there is less and less people coming in to the hairdressing industry and the training standards have dropped quite significantly. I sit on the board of Hair and Beauty Australia which is our industry association and it is the biggest issue that faces salon owners. On top of that there are a lot of salon owners who do not invest in ongoing training of their staff, which also lowers standards.

Getting back to communication with your stylist, it is a must that your stylist should open the doors of communication with you. A lot of stylists are guilty of talking too much about themselves and forget that you are paying them your hard earned cash for the attention to be on you not them.

When going into a new salon for the first time, I would imagine it is quite a daunting experience. You are about to meet this person for the first time and all of a sudden they are going to be putting their hands through your hair and if having a colour about to apply some pretty strong chemicals to your hair, and wielding  a pair of scissors at you. Pretty scary I say for someone you don’t know from a bar of soap.

Things to look for when meeting a stylist for the first time, are how interested they in you? Do they sit next you at eye level and discuss your past experiences with your hair? What you like and dislike about your hair? What products you use on your hair? This is the sort of information a good stylist should be asking when meeting you for the first time.

If you’re visiting your regular stylist they should be asking about how your last service was? Likes or dislikes, what can they do to improve on what they have done for you in the past. If you bought any products off them last time asking for feedback on how it was for you? Not just asking you are you having the usual?

A glamorous warm red hair colour.

A glamorous warm red hair colour.

Another great tip when dealing with a stylist is always use pictures to help explain what you are after. Your interpretation of the colour red might be totally different to your stylists. See images of the different types of red hair. There are many different shades of blonde and brown hair. My interpretation of short hair could be totally different to yours. Pictures don’t lie, they do tell 1000 stories and they help to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page. With the technology available to us today it makes it very easy to access pictures of different hairstyles. I often have clients emailing us a picture of a hairstyle they are interested in.

A great red hair colour, very different to the first image.

A great red hair colour, very different to the first image.

Be realistic about what you want to have done. You need to think about the texture, colour, and density of your hair before choosing a hairstyle. Again a good stylist who communicates well with you will give you the right advice when selecting a style. I strongly believe that good communication skills are just as important as technical (Hairdressing) skills.

At Hair by Phd we do invest in ongoing training of our team and this is not only in technical skills but also in developing great communication skills to build great relationships with our clients. We have a real desire to listen to our clients and give everyone of you an awesome experience every time you walk into our salon.
