A CONVERSATION ABOUT BALAYAGE

I recently sat down and had a chat with colourist extraordinaire Damien Rayner. We are organising to have Damien in our salon very shortly to do some more colour training with the team and the subject of Balayage came up. I’ve been hairdressing for over 30 years now and Balayage would have to be the longest lasting colour look in that time.

A Mother’s Love is one that does not stop giving

My mum once told me that you don’t start growing old until you lose your mum. I am very blessed to still have my mum and could never imagine life without her.  I saw an interview with Kelly Rowland on 60 Minutes on the weekend, she spoke about losing her mum recently and the devastating effect it had on her. A bond between mother and child is definitely like no other.

GET A HAIRCUT AND HELP SAVE THE PLANET

SSA_FB_Post_04

You may be surprised to learn that the Australian hairdressing industry sends 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium (that we use for foils, bleaching etc) back to landfill each year. That’s one and a half million kilos, about 715 cars, or 4 jumbo jets!

Unfortunately aluminium doesn’t degrade easily, it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option.

Dyson Hair Dryer vs Parlux 3200

It took many years of convincing by my wife to buy a Dyson Vacuum cleaner and was it worth it? Not really. Yes they look impressive they work just as well as any other cleaner but generally they are double the price. Value for money? I think not. Good marketing? Yes.

Will she convince me to spend $699 on the Dyson Hairdryer? Well now we are in my territory and I have this little comparison to put forward my case.

Hair Expo 2016

Hair Expo was held in Melbourne this year for the first time. What a weekend we had. Melbourne is a great town always so much to do down there. The city just seems to be so well planned with all it’s great entertainment venues.

Louise, Bec and myself went down for most of the weekend and as a hairdresser it is a great environment to be in to get the creative juices flowing. The girls did some seminars and got see and meet the celebrity hairstylist Guy Tang. Bec even waited in line to get a selfie with him. Selfie attached.

For those who are not aware I am currently the Vice-President of Hair and Beauty Australia also known as HABA. HABA is an industry association and we had a stand at Hair Expo. I spent two days on the stand chatting to other salon owners. Like other trades salon owners are struggling to find good people to employ. Apprentices are rare as hen’s teeth these days and it is sad to see so many former salon owners closing their doors and just operating from a home salon.

This works well for the individual, but is very bad for the industry as in the not too distant future the trade will collapse. So please support salon owners who do support the industry, as we need more young people being taught these skills not only with hairdressers but other trades as well? It makes me sad to see great trades people not sharing their skills. Their skill will die with them.

Also over the weekend we had two of our younger team members Hope and Tiana, join us for a day at Expo. It was also great to catch up with five other former Hair by Phd stylists. Isabelle who was my senior when I started in 1985 is back in the salon re-skilling. After moving away from the industry to have a family of 5 kids she has found a new found enthusiasm for hairdressing and is spending a few hours a week in the salon. It’s very inspiring to see her so excited about learning after so many years.

Julie, Mary, Michelle and Suzie all came down and had a girly weekend it was great to catch up with all the girls. I worked with most of these girls back in the late eighties and early nineties’.

I have attached some of the photos from over the weekend. Hairdressing is truly a great industry to be involved in and it is really the people that make it, from our wonderful clients to all our teammates and generally all the people involved in the industry.

Great Hairdresser in Carlingford

Since the launch of our Carlingford salon in November 2014, the salon has gone from strength to strength, bringing in new apprentices, a host of new clients and a range of customers from all across the north western region, including areas like West Pennant Hills, North Rocks, Telopea, Ryde and Castle Hill. This shows that the work being produced by our team at Carlingford is absolutely top of their game, and today we want to showcase some of those amazing looks.

Above we have a blue under-colour, designed to give a real pop to this beautiful brunette hair. An edgier style that shows real individuality and creativity, the evenness of the blue colour here is a real highlight. Typically, blue tones are harder to hold in the hair, as they are from the complete opposite colour spectrum to natural hair colours, which are normally in the range of warm tones. carlingford-hairdresser2

This soft pastel, rose-gold balayage was achieved with our Schwarzkopf colours and really shows off our clients ivory skintone. This is a soft look for those not wanting to go as overly dramatic with their colour but still wanting to move away from natural tone.

This beautiful bruntte-to-red colour melt is one of the most popular looks from our Carlingford salon on Instagram. Beautiful Autumn colour tones, perfect for trans-seasonal dressing, and a soft blend between the two colours. This colour will age on the hair really nicely, so don’t be afraid to go Ombre.

And finally, our piece de resistance! From a very average and uneven blonde, to a metallic blue grey, this colour is going to be huge this winter, as an extension of the grey-hair trend we saw happening last year. Using Olaplex with this colour allowed us to achieve our clients desired look whilst maintaining the hairs condition. I’m sure you would agree the beautiful tones of this blue grey are just to die for!

So which is YOUR favourite look out of our Carlingford salon? Do you know anyone in the area that could really use a great hairdresser that understands what they are looking for? If so, please SHARE this post, we want to make as much beautiful hair as we can!

If  you haven’t done so already check out our Facebook page and like us to follow all that is happening at Hair by Phd. You can also follow us on InstagramPinterest and Google+.

Sarkis will be back from hist surgery in a few weeks, and we will be talking about the change in hair trends as we move into winter!

Sincerely,

Bec
