Hair by Phd Colour Training with Damien Rayner

As mentioned in my last post I recently caught up with the amazing colourist Damien Rayner. Damien was voted one of the top 15 colourists in 2012 by Harper’s Bazaar and we have been lucky enough to have Damien as an educator in our salon since 2010.

I recently sat down and had a chat with colourist extraordinaire Damien Rayner. We are organising to have Damien in our salon very shortly to do some more colour training with the team and the subject of Balayage came up. I’ve been hairdressing for over 30 years now and Balayage would have to be the longest lasting colour look in that time.

Hair Expo 2016

Hair Expo was held in Melbourne this year for the first time. What a weekend we had. Melbourne is a great town always so much to do down there. The city just seems to be so well planned with all it’s great entertainment venues.

Louise, Bec and myself went down for most of the weekend and as a hairdresser it is a great environment to be in to get the creative juices flowing. The girls did some seminars and got see and meet the celebrity hairstylist Guy Tang. Bec even waited in line to get a selfie with him. Selfie attached.

For those who are not aware I am currently the Vice-President of Hair and Beauty Australia also known as HABA. HABA is an industry association and we had a stand at Hair Expo. I spent two days on the stand chatting to other salon owners. Like other trades salon owners are struggling to find good people to employ. Apprentices are rare as hen’s teeth these days and it is sad to see so many former salon owners closing their doors and just operating from a home salon.

This works well for the individual, but is very bad for the industry as in the not too distant future the trade will collapse. So please support salon owners who do support the industry, as we need more young people being taught these skills not only with hairdressers but other trades as well? It makes me sad to see great trades people not sharing their skills. Their skill will die with them.

Also over the weekend we had two of our younger team members Hope and Tiana, join us for a day at Expo. It was also great to catch up with five other former Hair by Phd stylists. Isabelle who was my senior when I started in 1985 is back in the salon re-skilling. After moving away from the industry to have a family of 5 kids she has found a new found enthusiasm for hairdressing and is spending a few hours a week in the salon. It’s very inspiring to see her so excited about learning after so many years.

Julie, Mary, Michelle and Suzie all came down and had a girly weekend it was great to catch up with all the girls. I worked with most of these girls back in the late eighties and early nineties’.

I have attached some of the photos from over the weekend. Hairdressing is truly a great industry to be involved in and it is really the people that make it, from our wonderful clients to all our teammates and generally all the people involved in the industry.

Olaplex – Beware of Imitations
Screen shot 2015-09-30 at 7.49.25 PM

A beautiful soft peachy pink, possible thanks to Olaplex.

As I mentioned in my August post What is Olaplex? Every now and then a product comes on the market that has a massive impact on the Hair industry. When this happens everyone wants to get on the bandwagon and get a piece of the action.

This is where imitations come into the game. Now I’m not saying that any of these imitations are no good, they can actually be just as good if not better. There are however the ones that say their product can do what the original can do but doesn’t live up to that promise.

Celebrity Hair Transformations 2015

On Sunday night I was celebrating my wife Briony’s birthday with all her family. My sister in-law Jane turned around to me and said how awesome her hair felt after having that new treatment in her hair last week. Jane had come in to have her highlights done the week before and I spoke to her about the Olaplex treatment. She likes to wear her hair quite light and can suffer from a little dryness and breakage.

Every now and then there comes a product in the hairdressing industry that really changes the industry and the way we do things as hairdressers dramatically. Some that come to mind are GHD irons, and Keratin Smoothing Treatments.

The next big thing in the hairdressing industry I think is going to be Olaplex. What is Olaplex I hear you ask? Olaplex is an additive we can put into our colour formulations or treat your hair with that allow us as hairdressers to stretch the boundaries in colouring hair. It basically allows us to colour hair as an example from very dark to very light without damaging the hair.

Kim Kardashian – Blonde or Brunette?

The talk in the salon this week has been all about Kim Kardashian’s blonde hair. It still blows me away how this girl and family for this matter get so much attention for what? Totally uninspired by the whole Kardashian story!  That’s my opinion and obviously because they are so popular, it doesn’t count for much.

So the talk is all about her bleach blonde hair, Blonde vs Brunette? For someone who doesn’t think much of the girl I actually don’t mind her change to blonde. I think she pulls it off ok, the girls in the salon don’t like it, so there has been some good debate.

Kim latest look. What do you think? Anyone else getting a little Madonna Flashback?

My 5 Tips On Fabulous Looking Hair This Winter

Winter Hair Tips

Winter Hair Tips

Winter has well and truly arrived, what does that mean for your hair? Winter can really have a damaging effect on your hair. With every degree in temperature drop your scalp slows down the production in sebum (natural oils) leaving your hair dryer than normal.

Going in and out of the cold air, hot rooms and wearing hats also can create a less than ideal environment for your hair and scalp. Lack of humidity also causes your hair to become dehydrated.

This is why in winter your hair will feel drier and is prone to be fly away and have a lot of static. Static is caused through a lack of moisture; the hair is searching for moisture when it gets to this stage.

Here are my 5 tips for keeping your hair looking beautiful this winter;

  1. Keep washing your hair to a minimum. Keeping a small build up of the natural oils in your hair for longer will help maintain moisture in your hair, stopping your hair from splitting and becoming fly away.
  2. Use a good leave-in moisturiser. This will increase the amount of moisture in your hair and also put a protective coating over your hair, to protect it from the harsh winter conditions. Kerastase make a great leave-in oil called Elixir Ultime. Made from 4 essential oils it is designed to hydrate your hair and keep it supple. If you don’t like using oil in your hair the Elixir Ultime comes in a leave –in Crème as well.
  3. Wear a hat to protect your hair from the harsh wintry conditions. Hats come in all shapes and sizes and are an ideal fashion accessory as well. Although as mentioned above not ideal for your scalp, it is better than exposing your hair to the elements.
  4. If you are using a hairdryer and styling iron on a regular basis, a heat protector is very useful. You would use this as well as a leave-in moisturiser to stop your hair from becoming brittle. Osis make a fantastic thermal protector called Flatliner. It protects your hair up to 200 degrees and also has good hold and shine qualities.
  5. Regular visits to your stylist. A good stylist will always recommend what is best for your hair. Regular trims are a must to stop your hair from becoming brittle and splitting. A deep conditioning hair mask will also be of benefit for winter. This can be done in a salon or once a week at home.
