5 Tips for Beautiful Hair this Summer

A very hot summer like the one we are having can be disastrous on your hair. The sun’s rays are not only dangerous for your skin but can tear your hair to shreds. Combine this with other all the other elements we expose our hair to in summer time like chlorine, salt water and sunscreen amongst others, and your hair can really get fried. Below are my five tips on how to care for your hair this summer.

1. Prevention is better than the cure.

How many times have we heard this, but it is true. Cover your hair where possible. Hat’s, scarf’s, bandanna’s, whatever your look is – use it. Like sunscreen for your skin, this is by far the best option. For the men like myself who has a receding hairline or thinning hair up top, pack on the sunscreen. Nothing worse than a sunburnt head.

2. Sunscreens for your hair.

The key is using the right products to help protect your hair. Kerastase has a great range of sun care products called Soleil. There is a shampoo to cleanse your hair after being in a pool or the surf, a masque that re-hydrates your hair after being exposed to the elements, a CC Crème to moisturise and act as a sunscreen and a product called Aqua-Seal. This product is amazing to help really protect your hair leaving a UV coating on your for maximum protection. Aqua-Seal has to be shampooed out of the hair after use. Keep reading to see our special offer on the Soleil range below.

3. Brushing your hair.

Using a good quality brush, it is recommended that you brush your hair on a regular basis. Your scalp produces natural oils and brushing your hair distributes the oils through to the mid-lengths and ends. This also hydrates your hair and can act as a protective barrier from the elements.

4. Styling products.

Using styling tools can take its toll on your hair. Combine that with all that’s going on in summer, and you can potentially do serious damage to the condition of your hair. One of our favourite products at the moment to use before and after styling is Serum Therapiste by Kerastase. It is a dual action serum, which can be used on both wet and dry hair. It is designed to repair and seal any split ends and has up to 230°c heat protection against all your styling tools. It will instantly leave the hair with an amazingly smooth and shiny finish.

5. Visit your stylist.

Having your hair trimmed regularly is a must to keep your hair in shape and to stop it from splitting. We also have amazing in-salon treatments like Olaplex and Kerastase Rituals, which can really strengthen the condition and restore the integrity of your hair. We can also touch up your colour or tone any discolouration you might have had over the holidays. Your Hair by Phd stylist is the best person to talk to about any concerns you might have with your hair.

My Five Tips For Healthy Hair This Summer

The holidays are over! How many of you feel like you haven’t even been on one. Back to routine like the holidays never even happened. I remember prior to having children and before our kids went to school, we always took our holidays in February. No crowds, great weather and half the price. They were good times and maybe some of you are in a position to be on holidays now. It’s a great position to be in. I loved being in Sydney in January, good weather, no traffic and lots to do. Sydney is a great place when it’s not packed to the rafters.

Summer holidays can take its toll on the condition of your hair. The sun, salt or chlorinated water can have very harsh effects on your hair. Your hair can become de-hydrated; the effects of the sun can strip your colour away and make it very brittle. It is very important to take good care of your hair during summer and below is my five tips to keeping your hair looking and feeling great.

  1. Visit your stylist!

After being away in the sun and the surf the best thing you can do is get your hair trimmed. A good trim will help seal those split ends and bring some life back to hair. While you are there ask your stylist about an intensive moisture treatment to really rehydrate your hair. At Hair by Phd we have some great options when it comes to rehydration with either our Schwarzkopf and Kerastase ranges.

  2. Cover Up!

Like your skin your hair will benefit from less exposure to the sun and the elements. A hat, scarf or if you do a lot of swimming in a pool a swim cap are the way to go.

  3. Home Hair Care Products!

A quality Shampoo, Conditioner, Treatment and leave-in moisturiser is a must. Ask your stylist about what they can recommend for your hair type. At Hair by Phd we can even literally put your hair and scalp under a microscope and give you the best products from our Kerastase range that will re-vitalise your hair personalised just for you.

  4. Keep using hot tools to a minimum!

I know this is hard to go without your styling tools, but it a great time of year to let your hair hang free. Apply a good moisturiser by softly scrunching it into your hair to give that loose beachy look. You can also tie it up into a loose updo. In summer your hair takes a lot less time to dry and you can use this to your advantage.

  5. Wash your hair straight after being in the surf!

Using your quality products the regime should be shampoo, condition and treat. Do this as soon as you can after exposing your hair to the elements. If you can’t do a treatment straight away, your leave-in moisturiser is a must.

So whether you’re on holidays enjoying the sun and the surf up or down our beautiful coastline or in Sydney enjoying the pool and our wonderful beaches care for your hair. I hope the tips above are helpful. If you have any questions ask your Hair by Phd stylist for advice.

My 5 tips on how to care for your Child’s hair!

Holidays are over and we are now well into February. Scary how time goes by so quickly. Three weeks ago I was in the USA skiing in sub zero temperatures, hard to imagine being in that cold now with the heat wave we have been having. Summer can really take its toll on our hair – let alone our children’s hair. We tend to make sure we are looking after our hair by using good products to maintain our luscious locks, but are we doing the same for our children?

One of the best things about living in Australia is our summer. We are blessed with beautiful beaches, parks and bushlands to explore. We are known for our outdoor lifestyle and envied by a lot of people around the world.

Yesterday I spent the day with my family and friends at the beautiful Clovelly Beach. People watching is a very interesting past time and in my case I always find myself looking at hair styles and all the interesting looks people wear, even at the beach. We truly live in an eclectic society, which makes for very interesting people watching and I believe makes Sydney a fantastic place to live in.

Summer does have its drawbacks, mainly on our skin and hair. We all have heard the continuous message of slip, slop, slap for protecting your skin. Although not life threatening, your hair needs to be protected as well. To maintain your beautiful locks you should think about what you do to protect it from the harsh rays of the sun and the elements like salt water, chlorine and wind.

These days there are lots of products on the market to help you do this. Below are my tips on how you can look after your hair in the summer.

  1. Cover up. Like your skin prevention is the best cure. Hats, hats, and more hats.
  2. Hair again is like your skin and tends to dry out when there is a lack of moisture. In-salon conditioning treatments are the best way to replace moisture for dehydrated hair. We have a range of these treatments at Hair by Phd to suit all hair types. We also give you a soothing head massage just for good measure.Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 4.01.18 pm
  3. Sunscreen for your hair. By far in my opinion the best hair care range when it comes to UV protection for your hair is Soleil by Kerastase. Aqua Seal is the signature product in the range. This works exactly like a sunscreen and also protects your hair from chlorine and other elements, which may damage your hair. It also protects your colour from fading. Used in conjunction with the shampoo and masque you have your total summer hair care solution. All these products have built in UV filters for your ultimate protection. Ask your stylist next time you are at Hair by Phd to show you this fab range of sun care products.
  4. Regular Salon Visits. Having your hair trimmed regularly is one of the best ways to keep your hair in good shape. This stops your hair from splitting, keeping your hair looking fab. It also allows your stylist to monitor the condition of your hair and recommend the right care.

Enjoy the great Aussie summer and I hope these tips will be helpful in caring for your hair. If you have any questions regarding the above or any other issue you might have with your hair, call into Hair by Phd and let one of our highly trained experts look after you.
