Weird, out-there, crazy are some of the words you here to describe haircuts that are very high fashion. The only places you normally see this kind of style is in a hair show or being worn by a hairdresser. You will also see these haircuts on some Sydney streets. Why, I hear you ask, would anyone want to do this to his or her hair? Why not I say, it’s what makes us individuals and interesting.
One of the biggest rewards of being a hairdresser is that you get to meet some amazing people along the way. None more amazing than a long time client of mine Lesley Slender.
Often you read about all the top hair salons in Sydney being exclusively in the City and surrounding suburbs. A lot of the time this is true, however even if I do say so myself, our staff at Hair by Phd do our best to provide an excellent standard in hairdressing for all our clients. A standard that rivals the city salons.

“I love my mummy because she reads to me and lies down next to me. She is also a very good coach and is very kind.”
This is the answer I got from my six year old Sam when I asked him what he loves about mummy. Charlie his twin brother says that
“She is good at netball; she is kind to me and very loving.”
What does your Mum mean to you?
Every year at this time of the year we are reminded about what our mums mean to us. I would have to say that mums play a massive roll in all our lives. They should be rewarded everyday as I wrote in my post last year. Should everyday be Mother’s Day? You can read that post by clicking here.

P.S. I hope you enjoyed my ‘Champion Mums of Today” post last week. The feedback and comments are very much appreciated. I think I accumulated a few brownie points with that post. I saw Briony crying when she was reading it. If you missed out on it you can read it by clicking here.
Does your stylist give you advise on how to care for your hair at home? Is it advice you would like to receive? If it is and your stylist is not giving this advice, don’t be afraid to ask for it. Your stylist should be a trained professional and not only should he or she be looking after your hair needs in the salon but also should help you with maintaining your style at home.
The team at hair by PHD in 1987 on the left, and in 2014 on the right.
The end of another school year is just about done. The HSC is nearly over and I’m sure there are a lot of parents out there stressing about how well their child is going to do. Will he or she get into law or maybe medicine? How about becoming a hairdresser? Or maybe doing another trade of some sort?
This might be a bit controversial but I think there is way to much pressure put on our kids today to go to university. Not for all kids, some are made for university but some kids are not. Let’s take me for example. I left school in Year 10, way back in 1985 and decided that I would do an apprenticeship in hairdressing. In those days the TAFE colleges were full of trade’s people, in hairdressing we had four classes of 12 students everyday for 5 days. Today, you would be lucky to get a class of 12 in one week.
There are a lot of young people out there that would make great trades people, but get talked in to going to university and are missing out on a great career opportunity.
I was lucky enough to be on a salon owner’s conference in the beautiful Hamilton Island recently. I was asked at the conference to be on a panel in front of about 80 salon owners from around Australia discussing issues that affect our industry. I looked around the room and I was blown away by the amount of highly successful salon owners who have not only become wonderful trades people, they are also running very successful salons. As salon owners and hairdressers they are giving a lot to the community by employing young people and teaching them to be great hairdressers and life skills. I really felt privileged to be part of this group.
I am also sure there are a lot of people out there in other trades who have done and continue to do the same. Most of the group would have left school in year 10 and have achieved very highly.
I also feel blessed that I can make a difference in peoples lives through hairdressing. I have built relationships with clients that are priceless and that will last a lifetime. Seeing clients in their prime going to their school formals, having their 21st, getting married and having kids. Then there is the other side, which really affects me. Seeing clients who I have known for 25 years go through the darker side of life- marriage break ups, suffering with serious illness and then there are the ones that leave us forever.
I am very grateful to be able to make a difference to my clients lives by being someone they can confide in or making them feel a million bucks when they walk out with a new ‘do’.
At Hair by Phd we are very lucky to have great young people working for us and I am proud to say that a girl who has been with us for nearly 9 years is partnering with us to open a second Hair by Phd salon. Bec Moses started with us straight out of school and is about to be the part owner of Hair by Phd Carlingford. She is going to embark on a journey that is rewarding in so many ways.
So parents out there, if your kids come home one day and tell you they want to be a hairdresser; don’t stress it’s not that bad!

It is hard to believe that it is nearing the end of another HSC year. Most Year 12 students would have now graduated and are busily studying for the big exams. The next big thing on the calendar is the formal. It’s great to have something exciting like this to look forward to after finishing your schooling years.
So, is the dress organised? How about the car, the after party, hair and make up? Well that’s where Hair by Phd comes in! Read on to see our hair and makeup package we have organised just for you.
Are you wearing your hair up or down? Do you want something fairly standard or are you going to steal the show? Below are some styling ideas that could work for you.
Wearing your hair long and luscious
As seen on our Facebook and Pinterest pages, wearing formal hair down can look effective. The look has the ability to look hot, sexy and very feminine. Think about your dress and how your hair is going to suit you best. Your hair should compliment what you are wearing and visa versa.
Sweeping your hair up and elegant
For such a special occasion this would be my recommendation. Again, it depends on what you are wearing and suitability but there is something special about dressing up and having your hair styled in an elegant up do. Check out some of the styles above that our team have created.
At Hair by Phd we realise that is a very special time of your life and we would love to make you look and feel special on your formal day. We have a wonderfully talented make up artist in Leanne Baxter who has worked extensively with MAC cosmetics. Leanne has been doing makeup for Hair by Phd clients for many years now with beautiful results.
Our talented team of hairstylists are ready to show you how they can make you hair look spectacular on your special day. Louise heads the team with many years of experience including styling Andrea Bocelli’s lead vocalists Maria Aleida (pictured above) hair at his big Sydney show at All Phones Arena. Louise also used clip-in hair extensions to add volume and length. Clip-in extensions are available at Hair by Phd.
Excitedly, our team have also been asked by Schwarzkopf to style the WAGS ( wives and girlfriends) hair next week at the NRL Dally M Awards. Look out for some great styles!
We have created an exclusive Formal Hair and Makeup Package, just for this occasion. Our package includes a style and make-up consultation, Make-up with Leanne Baxter and hair styled by the team at Hair by Phd. We will also include a $25 voucher to use on your next visit to Hair by Phd for any full priced hair service. All for $249.00*
To make a booking you can give us a call on (02) 9635 4721 or email us on email@example.com

We often relate pastel colours in hair as being “out there”. Pink has been wearing pastel pink in her hair for many years. Like all other fashions they start out being very dramatic and avant garde and as the look becomes more commercial it also becomes less dramatic. It’s funny when there is a new fashion or look in the pipeline people look at it and cringe. By the time the look has become mainstream, everyone is wearing it. Well guess what, pastels are going to be huge this spring and summer.
Have a look at who is already wearing pastels; Jennifer Hawkins is looking pretty in pink with some pastel pink through her locks. I think she would look great with any colour but that’s just my opinion. Also it’s great to see Jessica Rowe with a change of colour. Her pastel hair, I think, looks amazing.
At Hair by Phd we have been playing around with colours to produce some fantastic tones. Last week we had Damien Rayner one of Sydney’s if not Australia’s top colourist come in and do a training session with the team. We had a couple of girls have some pastel colours put through their hair and the results where amazing. Check out the two make-overs below.
Damien also worked with the team on some fantastic high-lighting techniques creating some amazing looks combining balayage and foiling together. We also transformed one of our models who had been colouring her hair black for about 3 years. We did some stunning highlights through her hair and we are going to work on getting her lighter whilst keep the integrity of her hair condition in tact.
The beauty of pastel colours there is such a wide variety of colours to choose from. You can have small subtle strands put in or be as bold as you would like to be. It also comes in hair chalk which you can apply to your hair for a special occasion and it just washes out.
So if you would like to have some fun this spring summer with pastel colours or have just feel like having a change of colour, what better time to do so than this spring. The team are ready and roaring to go, equipped with some really exciting ideas and techniques. Talk to your stylist next time you are in the salon. Call us on (02) 9635 4721 or email us on firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment.
If you haven’t been to Hair by Phd before go to our website and request a $25 new client gift voucher we would love to see you in our salon.
Look forward to seeing you in the salon soon.

Is curly hair in fashion? You bet it is. It’s not like the good old days where we were winding perms all day and the bigger the hair the better. Curly hair can look amazing and the curly hair looks of today are very versatile and wide ranging; from the fro to beautiful soft sexy curls.
In this post I will share with you some trade secrets about how to get your curly hair looking fab. Using the right products, styling tools and techniques on how to dry naturally curly hair to get the best result possible.
Naturally curly hair is normally naturally dry and lacking moisture. People with curly hair always struggle with frizz and hair dehydration. Using the right hair care products are important to maintain and style curly hair. Below are my tips and tricks for fabulous curly hair.
Secret Tips and Tricks
- Never ever put a brush or comb near dry curly hair. (Afros excluded here) This is a sure way to create frizz. However you should give your hair a good brush just prior to shampooing your hair to distribute the natural oils through the hair this will also make your hair easier to detangle when conditioning.
- Moisturise. As I said earlier most naturally curly hair is also naturally dry. It is very important to use good quality leave in moisturisers in your hair. This will hydrate your hair, control frizz and leave your curls looking more defined. Kerastase make a great product Oleo-Curl Crème. It nourishes, protects and defines the hair. Also Elixir Ultime by Kerastase is a great leave in oil. It is made up of four essential oils that leaves your hair feeling supple and promotes shine.
- Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s hard to go past the Kerastase Oleo Curl shampoo and masque (conditioner). It is designed for curly hair to nourish and soften. It smells awesome too. There are lots of curly hair products on the market just make sure you are using something that is going to add moisture. Remember to detangle your hair in the shower with conditioner in your hair.
- Styling curly hair can be frustrating if you are not getting the results you crave. Here are some tips for styling. 1. Hands off- try not to touch your hair when you are styling it. This will only promote the frizz. 2. Towel dry gently, using a micro fibre towel. Micro fibre towels create less friction which leads to less frizz. Do not dry heavily just dry your hair so it is not dripping. 3. If by the time you get to styling your hair it has dried off in areas, wet the hair again with a water spray. It is important that the hair is wet evenly. 4. Apply moisturiser and styling product to damp hair. The best curly hair product I have used is Osis Curl Me Soft. It defines the curl without being crunchie. Nothing worse than having crunchie 80’s frizz. ‘Gee we used to go through some mousse and hairspray in those days.’ 5. Use a diffuser to dry your hair. Think heat rather than air when drying curly hair. For more body tip your head upside down to dry. Again try not to touch your hair, let the natural curls take shape.
- There are all sorts of styling tools available to create curls; you can use a wand to define your curls after drying your hair or to create different shaped curls. Cloud 9 make a great range of styling irons. If you would like to have a test drive of a styling iron, Hair by Phd is having ‘A Girls Night Out’ where the team from Cloud 9 and Hair by Phd will be demonstrating all the Cloud 9 irons. Click here for more details on A Girls Night Out.
- Have regular trims. It is important that your hair is cut into shape. The correct shape will give you a style that will last.
- The dirtier your curly hair is the better it will sit. It sounds gross but it is true ask anyone with naturally curly hair? Depending on your lifestyle washing your hair 1-2 times a week is sufficient. Your curls will be more defined the longer you leave it.
Hope this has helped you with managing your curls. If you would like anymore info about the above please call in to the salon and talk to one of our stylists. They would love to help. If you have any great curly hair tips please feel free to post a comment below. Love to hear from you.
